I’ve been very passive in how I participate in the online film blogging community. Not because I don’t love it, but because once you start it can be an endless stream of responses and such. Then again, maybe it’s not all that interesting sometimes.

Anyways, this time around I’m always game for confessing, especially sins, as it relates to film. MyFilmReviews has a great blogathon ongoing about Movie Confessionals… so here’s mine.

Which classic movie don’t you like/can’t enjoy and why?

I guess the top of this list has to go to Citizen Kane. I’ve only seen it the once about three years ago now and I just felt it was too much. It was a three hour plus explanation of why money can’t buy you love, or happiness, and someone through all the other things I just couldn’t see what the rest of the world sees in it.

Which ten classic movies haven’t you seen yet?

I actually did a post about this a month or so ago and it hasn’t changed much since then, but for those of you too lazy to click through:

Have you ever sneaked into another movie at the cinema?

Actually no. Besides the one year I was in the USA I didn’t happen to be in a theatre culture that was conducive to this happening. In Jamaica when you go to the movies, when the show is over there’s an usher at each screening room’s door making sure to point everyone to the exit. So even if I wanted to duck into another showing it would be almost impossible, especially since most movies end at the same time, so even if I wanted to it couldn’t happen.

Which actor/actress do you think is overrated?

Daniel Radcliffe? He’s an easy target but I feel that people are giving him too much credit for the Harry Potter franchise and it’s bleeding over into his soon to be career with little evidence for his praise. He’s just a child who got lucky enough to be placed into a massively successful franchise and saw it the whole way through.

From which big director have you never seen any movie (and why)?

Define big? I think in the general sense none maybe. However, if I try to think of a filmmaker I’ve yet to see any of their work that I should get on it’s Aki Kaurismäki. I’ve been hearing his name a lot recently and am quite interested in his work. Why? No reason other than I just haven’t gotten around to seeing it yet.

Which movie do you love, but is generally hated?

I’d like to say The Fountain just because I feel it doesn’t get enough love, but I know there are a lot of lovers of that film out there. Instead then I will take up the position of support for Speed Racer. The film was a bomb at the box office and was critically panned, however everytime it’s on TV I have to iron out the entire two and half hour runtime without fear of regret and continually find myself smiling throughout.

Have you ever been “one of those annoying people” at the cinema?

I guess law of averages says yes. Maybe when I was younger and such. But I truly doubt it. When I was younger I would go to the movies with mostly my parents and they were always very strict about behaviour, so I don’t know. When I was that age I didn’t have a cell phone (not that many around then, not that I’m that old) and not like the technology they have today.

Did you ever watch a movie, which you knew in advance would be bad, just because of a specific actor/actress was in it? Which one and why?

I do that all the while. I do it for movies that isn’t even just for an actress/actor or anything, just because I want to consume all media that I can. However, to answer the question, the last one I think I did this for was Killer Elite for Clive Owen/Jason Statham. I was hoping for a horrible action film that I could laugh at, it just laughed at me for spending my time with it.

Did you ever not watch a specific movie because it had subtitles?

More and more this is true. While I haven’t watched a foreign film with the English dub track since my high school years, and refuse to on principle, I will procrastinate on watching foreign films for the reason of not wanting to have to read subtitles most times. If there’s a choice between that and just watching a film done in English that I can be more passive with I will watch that for the sake of saving energy and not falling asleep that quickly.

Are there any movies in your collection that you have had for more than five years and never watched?

More than five years? I don’t believe so. However, the DVD I’ve owned the longest and still never seen (at all, not even just not on the DVD itself) is Volver, the Pedro Almodovar film. I watched the first five minutes, got distracted and haven’t put the disc back in yet.

Which are the worst movies in your collection and why do you still own them?

8 Mile & Crash are the films which immediately come to mind. I still own them because I’m a hoarder I guess. I don’t see the value in throwing them away and no one has looked at them and demanded to take them off my hands, so they are still there in the collection.
