FROM PARIS WITH LOVE [MOVIE REVIEW]

James Reece [Jonathan Ryhs Meyers] is the aid to the US Ambassador in France.  James wants to become a proper special ops agent and after showing some initiative his employers decide to team him up with Charlie Wax [John Travolta] on a mission to get answers in Paris to stop the bad guys.

This movie is balls to the wall action.  When the film is over you can’t help but feel satisfied at how wonderful a throw away action film it is.  I would even go so far as to ask for a new cut of the film where Pierre Morel cuts down the first ten or so minutes, when he’s busy setting up Jonathan Ryhs Meyers’ character, down to about two and let John Travolta’s introduction happen faster.

If you ever thought that Travolta was done with being awesome, especially after last year’s Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, then you were wrong.  He’s still overacting like hell but he’s oozing charisma as a ‘take no prisoners’ character that you can’t help but enjoy as he destroys Paris all day long in an attempt to get the bad guys.  I love how even at one point I found myself questioning if John Travolta was a good guy at all.  What if the twist was going to be that James had picked up the wrong psycho with a gun at the airport?  As awesome as that would’ve been, the twist they gave me was adequate enough to keep the film moving.

Pierre Morel (also directed Taken and District 13) returns to his action style romp through Paris again.  I find it interesting that he refuses to set his films anywhere but Paris.  I know he’s French but I wonder if in the future he’ll ever have a Frenchman heading to Belgium or something.  Is he getting tired of having his country destroyed?  The film contains all of his stylized action charms that you can expect after seeing his other two features and even though Luc Beson wrote the story for the film it is pretty light on the plot and more reliant on out the top characters being involved in ridiculous chase sequences and gun fights.

This right now sits as my favourite movie of 2010 because it’s without a doubt the most fun I’ve had at the theatre so far this year.  It may also be since not many good movies have come out yet.  Go see it for the action and nothing more.  I can’t wait for the string of sequels: From Beirut with Love, From Copenhagen with Love and From Naples with Love.

IMDB says 6.5/10

Rotten Tomatoes says 35%

I say 8.0/10

Without my blog, I am useless. I must fire my blog true. I will.
