Two hit-men from London are told to hide out in Bruges (it’s in Belgium) after a job and wait for a call from their boss. Ken (Brendan Gleeson) and Ray (Colin Farrell) play the two hit-men. The two of them argue and make a piss about being in the middle of gothic medieval Europe while they try as best to enjoy what they can most of the town waiting for the call from the boss.
This movie is flipping amazing. It almost makes me happy that Hancock was sold out Wednesday night since I doubt I would’ve watched this movie so soon if that didn’t happen. This movie made me feel about Colin Farrell (one of the many actors I had condemned to the “pretty boy” corner) the same I felt about Josh Hartnett. Meaning that most of the movies he had done before were horrible and the only reason they made money was because all the sixteen year old girls had a crush on him and had to go and appease their feelings for that day. However, when “Lucky Number Slevin” came out and I saw that movie, it was just so fun and enjoyable and Hartnett’s character was so quick witted and able to make all of the audience love that he was always being smacked to the ground for that fat lip he loved to flap about that it was great. Which is exactly what I feel this movie does for us with Colin Farrell.
The story isn’t that deep and the main plot isn’t developed a lot. This movie could easily be done in a thirty minute short rather than having to be made into a hour and fourty minute feature film. However, the movie wouldn’t be as enjoyable if it were cut down to basics, so I thank you Film4 and Focus Features and Martin McDonagh for padding the movie with all the wit and great sequencing of the story.
One thing this movie definitely has against it is that I think they advertised it badly. They advertised this movie as an action film with a slice of comedy, while its the other way around a comedy movie with a slice of action. Which I think is misleading since there is basically ten to fifteen minutes of the movie where there is actual action. The rest is Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson’s characters touring the town and making jokes and all sorts of stuff. So what will happen, is that the movie would be split amongst the crowd, all the action junkies would go and feel robbed and all the rest of the open-minded crowd would love it for what it is. Which is a playful witty romp through a history filled town in Belgium, the only thing is that it happens to be hit-men who happen to touring rather than your average couple.
Bruges itself is showcased in this movie. And it definitely works. It goes from being the bane of Ray’s existence to being a stage for him to meet interesting people and sport some of his opinions of life and people. The gothic buildings, the narrow canals and the brick laid streets make for a very dark and drab place for Ray to play up his deep dark depression . And also for Ken to try and stop him from moping over not being able to be in the pub in London or Dublin
The last piece of this movie I want to mention is the boss, Harry Waters (Ralph Fiennes). I think that this is Ralph Fiennes best impression of Vinnie Jones, and I’m probably willing to bet that if I research it the studio tried to get Vinnie Jones to do this movie, and play that part. He sounds and acts just like him, and it would be another typecast role for Vinnie Jones if he did it. So even though I would’ve called it normal for Vinnie I enjoyed Fiennes acting in the movie as Harry Waters.
So overall this is a must see and a must buy. I love it and I don’t think I would change much about this movie if I could.
IMDB says 8.1/10
Rotten Tomatoes says 79%
I say 8.5/10
