MONSTERS VS. ALIENS [MOVIE REVIEW]

Susan [Reese Witherspoon] has been hit by a meteor at her wedding. After surviving the incident minutes later she erupts into Ginormica [i.e. The 50-foot woman], and is captured by the government and stored in a facility with other monsters. General W. R. Monger [Kiefer Sutherland] is the warden of this facility where it also houses creatures such as: B.O.B. [Seth Rogen], Dr. Cockroach Ph.D. [Hugh Laurie], The Missing Link [Will Arnett] and Insectosaurus. Gallaxhar [Rainn Wilson] is an alien seeking the energy from that previously mentioned meteor, Quantonium, and has sent out a huge friggin’ machine to get it. With the government threatened by this weapon they send out their final hope, the monsters, to defeat it.

This movie is an amazing and more than anything ninety-minute version of a Saturday morning cartoon which plays on the famous monster movies of the 50s and 60s. I couldn’t help but love every minute of the movie, and all of the characters are great. I loved the way that all the monsters interacted and especially B.O.B. [spoof off the blob]. I’ve been very critical of Seth Rogen being a voice actor but here he fit the character perfectly, it was just so random some of the stuff that came out of him and I bought it especially since he was supposed to be the dumb one since he had no brain. When he ‘forgot how to breathe’ I was dying with laughter. Hugh Laurie was great also throughout the film playing the mad scientist who changed himself into a cockroach years ago [spoof of The Fly I believe] and so was Will Arnet as The Missing Link.

There were numerous side characters voiced by amazing talent that made the film more than just a children’s film. The President of the United States, President Hathaway [Stephen Colbert], had a lot of hilarious moments that I feel children might not get all of them but for fans of his show on Comedy Central will find it more than just amusing. Another great character was General W. R. Monger, played by Kiefer Sutherland, which was amazing especially since I couldn’t tell throughout the movie that it was Mr. Bauer himself. I loved the ridiculous General character than commanded the team of monsters and always has a parachute on him, just in case.

I can tell you that children enjoyed this movie immensely and parents did as well. The writers had the good sense to mix up the jokes like they did with fan favourites like Shrek and Kung Fu Panda which the studio, Dreamworks, did in the last few years. And in the end the film had a little message for all the children, even though it’s a message that was delivered in nearly every other Dreamworks animated film, i.e. Believe in yourself and not to judge a person by their looks alone.

I recommend everyone go out and check out the movie and take their children. It’s a load of fun and you won’t be disappointed for sure.
