MOVIE REVIEW: SALT (2010)

Evelyn Salt (Angelina Jolie) is a CIA agent.  One day a Russian agent walks into the CIA and turns himself in.  Salt is asked to interrogate the man.  This man, Orlov (Daniel Olbrychski), tells a story of how a Russian spy embedded in the US population is going to assassinate the president.  Orlov eventually says that the name of the Russian spy is Evelyn Salt.  This therefore puts Salt into a panic and she ends up going on a run around the US from the CIA and other forces to try and prove her innocence.

Here’s one of those movies we get so often where the names and occupations really don’t matter, the meat of the matter is that a badass individual is forced to go on the run and allowed to do all sorts of damage all over the place while reminding us that they are the smartest person in the movie.  Twists are going to be happening left, right and center; so be on the lookout for them.  While the film remains as predictable as predictable can be it still remains to be a really cool action film.  Angelina Jolie is great in it.  Seeing the film makes me realise how happy I am that Tom Cruise didn’t end up being the lead (as was originally planned) since I’m sure his usual character that we saw a lot of in Knight and Day would’ve taken over all the wonderful kick ass action style that Jolie brought to the film.

I did like the addition of characters like Ted Winter (Liev Schreiber) and Peabody (Chewitel Ejiofor).  Even though they aren’t lighting up the screen with Oscar heavy performances here they definitely added a little tension to the film as they chase her across the country from scene to scene.  One is her close friend and partner, Ted, trying to keep the hope alive that she’s not a Russian spy; and the other is a counter-intelligence agent, Peabody, who wants to bring her in and find out the truth.  You don’t so much hate Peabody for being the one who goes against our protagonist, but rather you want Salt to prove her innocence the good old fashioned way – i.e. a lot of gunshots and karate chops.

I’m honestly trying to be quite vague (and also slightly misleading) about the plot because the truth of the matter is that this film’s plot, even though it isn’t the real important part, remains completely unknown when you walk into the movie.  When you walk in you have no idea whether Salt is the CIA agent or the Russian spy, and you have no idea whether Orlov is speaking any kind of truths, mainly because of how closely they decided to cut the trailers that we see.  I must say though that even I was able to play ‘guess the next twist’ perfectly with this film, which I must say is a rarity.  However, it doesn’t take away from my enjoyment of watching Jolie drive police cars off roads by shocking the driver with a stun gun or watching her turn three bottles of detergent and a fire extinguisher into an insanely awesome grenade launcher of some kind.

This is a through and through action film and if you’re not ready to be entertained by people being killed and knocked out from beginning to end then you should just not bother with this movie.  However, for those of you out there who’ve been looking for your next film to chew on since The A-Team then this is the one for you.
