Another week and I’m already scraping the bottom of the barrel to find new additions to Netflix to discuss. I’m still searching for those other places to discover release dates for VOD films via other avenues, but until then don’t be worried I will be here with my recommendations for the week to come of Netflix filled viewing. While the list below isn’t endless I must say they are some fantastic pieces of media to dive into, so I’m not leaving you guys hanging…
The Hunt (2013)
I’ve discussed this movie before within the confines of TUMP as well as being the closest outlier to my top ten films of the year gone by, it missed the list for various reasons but more than anything else it was just one film more than ten that I adored this year gone by.
As a story about a man who has to go through what I can only imagine might just be the worst social ordeal that anyone could go through. Because at the end of the day no matter how innocent he is in the eyes of any logical court system that we put our faith in I honestly don’t believe that the world would be able to see him as innocent again. He is forever resigned to this title that he will never be able to shake, just because children are the worst.
The film proves what we already knew about cinema, Mads Mikkelsen makes everything better.
The Attack (2013)
We watch the news and see the stories of suicide bomb attacks throughout the Middle East, but what if that story was about your wife who you had no clue was even interested in political/religious wars.
This film plays on not just the ideas and thoughts behind these kind of attacks and the organizations that manage and enact them, but also more on the human level of a man trying to find out about his now deceased wife. He’s given a title and life that doesn’t allow the audience to dismiss these social questions with ‘easy’ media-type responses of poverty and such. It forces us to come to terms with our ideals and not just our need to survive in this world which creates drama and progression that isn’t easy on an audience, but rewards you for letting the film take you somewhere you probably didn’t think of before.
Attack on Titan (TV) (2012)
Let me be the first to be surprised that this made it onto my list of recommendations this week. I remember people going crazy for this show a year or so back when it had started to air in Japan, and as I’ve spoken about before on this site my interactions with Japan Anime TV has dwindled in my adult life for a number of reasons. There are a couple of shows I’m watching now that I would like to call the guiltiest of pleasures (even though I’m trying my hardest to rid myself of that term these days). However, with a drought of titles that looked interesting being added to Netflix this past week I decided to give this show a shot.
I’m now five episodes in and I’m enjoying it. The show features a world that looks like what a post apocalyptic world would look like if the apocalypse occurred in some sort of medieval time, and the apocalypse was created by the addition of a sort of giant being (referred to as Titan) just started terrorizing society. In this one city which has been peacefully residing behind these giant walls that one day are broken down by a “Colossal Titan”. This event changes the world for a young boy who loses his mother and pushes him to a life where he joins the military who’s been trying to combat these titans using some weird wired flying thing that they use and big knives. The animation looks kind of fantastic most times, the comedy is on point when it’s there and the few fight sequences I’ve seen thusfar are pretty impressive — though I do get annoyed when there’s a quick cut of CG gears and such — which makes me happy. As I said, I’m only five eps into this 25 episode long series, but I’m looking forward to reaching the end and hoping I enjoy the ride along.
Raging Bull!
