Kim [Maggie Grace] goes on a trip to Paris with her friend. She is taken by a group who preys on young women. Her father, Bryan [Liam Neeson], is an ex-spy and uses his old contacts and skills to get her back.
This movie is an action packed romp across Paris. I can’t begin to explain to you how enjoyable this film is, I actually watched this twice already. Liam Neeson sure as hell pulled off the action hero here, and he’s over fifty years old. The film felt knocking on the Bourne style action door, or maybe the door that leads you to that door.
The acting in this film surprisingly isn’t that bad, except for the ‘ball scratching’ dialogue bit. These types of films we all know tend to depend so much on the action and forget about small things like dialogue and good acting, but Liam does well here with his dialogue and some nice acting bits. The story is also supremely well done here. They didn’t just spend five minutes setting up the kidnap and then hit the start button on the action. The director, Pierre Morel, gave us some time to be introduced to the whole family situation with Bryan and his daughter Kim. They even gave us a scene where he let us know how badass Bryan is even before we know Kim is going to Paris.
The action is gloriously shot and well choreographed. I can only describe it as some sweet Bourne style close-quarters-combat. If you’ve seen any of the Bourne trilogy – which I recommend to anyone – you know exactly what I’m talking about. There is some great improvised fighting styles here, and suckers taste pavement too quickly to realize what’s going on.
This movie is definitely one of my guilty pleasures of the year. I doubt this can be called a ‘great’ film, but it is probably some of the most fun I’ve had watching since Iron Man. I didn’t need to think too hard, and it had a simple story going for it. The action is great, and the character development with Bryan is good. This is a for sure DVD buy for me.
Overall, you need to see this. Especially since summer is over you don’t know when you’ll see another movie like this again. At least not until the new Bond film, Quantum of Solace, comes out.
IMDB says 7.8/10
Rotten Tomatoes says 52%
I say 8.0/10
Of course you know Luc Besson (The Professional or LEON) had a hand in this thing, so duh it was a no brainer this thing would be fabulous
