I’m actually a big fan of awards ceremonies. Love them or hate them they’re a big part of the cinema. Every year a group of individuals get together to decide which movies were the best of the year, and then I (as well as the rest of the internet) try our best to remind them how wrong they are.
Tonight is the 68th Golden Globes Awards. In years gone by I would do my predictions and would usually submit two seperate picks. Who I think deserves to win, and who I believe will actually win. This year I think I’m going to go about this differently. I’m going to just submit my selections for who deserved to win and hope that the HFPA – having already mucked up the nominations – will have the common sense to just agree with me.
So here are my selections for the categories below.
Best motion picture, drama
And the Nominees Are:
Black Swan
The Fighter
Inception
The King’s Speech
The Social Network
And The Winner Is
With Black Swan being my #1 film of the year it’s easily my pick for the film to win this year. The only film that I’ve been unable to see from this category to date is David O. Russel‘s The Fighter, which even though I have high hopes for I doubt can beat Aronofsky‘s swan song.
Best motion picture, musical or comedy
And the Nominees Are:
Alice in Wonderland
Burlesque
The Kids Are All Right
Red
The Tourist
And The Winner Is
The Kids Are All Right is without a doubt the cream of the crop from this award. With numerous snubs like The Other Guys, Cyrus and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World I believe the HFPA have decided to make sure that The Kids Are All Right won’t have any heavy lifting to win the award. They’ve taken the controversy out of the win and put it all into the nomination.
Best Director
And the Nominees Are:
Darren Aronofsky – Black Swan
David Fincher – Social Network
Tom Hooper – King’s Speech
Christopher Nolan – Inception
David O. Russell – The Fighter
And the Winner is:
David Fincher is definitely one of my favourite directors and he was able to turn a story about people bickering in a room for two hours into one of the most compelling films of the year. If you still haven’t seen it then get out and watch it.
Best Actor in a motion picture
And the nominees Are:
Jesse Eisenberg – Social Network
Colin Firth – The King’s Speech
James Franco – 127 Hours
Ryan Gosling – Blue Valentine
Mark Wahlberg – The Fighter
The Winner Is
I personally believe that Ryan Reynolds gave a better pound for pound performance in Buried but this is the one that got nominated so I’m going to go with James Franco who’s been knocking on the door for a few years now and definitely has shown himself to be one of the best actors of this crop of young actors.
Best supporting Actor in a motion picture
And the nominees Are:
Christian Bale – The Fighter
Michael Douglas – Wall Street, Money Never Sleeps
Jeremy Renner – The Town
Jeffrey Rush – The King’s Speech
Andrew Garfield – The Social Network
And the Winner Is:
He was brilliant last year in The Hurt Locker and he did it again a year later. I do admit that I’ve heard that this award really belongs to Christian Bale from The Fighter, but since I still have yet to see that film this is my pick for now.
Best Actor in a motion picture, musical or comedy
And the Nominees Are:
Johnny Depp – Alice in Wonderland
Johnny Depp – The Tourist
Paul Giamatti- Barney’s Version
Jake Gyllenhaal – Love and Other Drugs
Kevin Spacey – Casino Jack
And the Winner Is:
This category is a bit of a loaded gun because there are basically no good picks. Both of Depp‘s performances were mediocre to rubbish and I haven’t seen any of the other films nominated. If I had to go off basic expectation I’d have to hope that Giamatti‘s performance out does the quality of the film and saves the category. Once again comedy this year has been ignored by the HFPA.
Best Actor in a mini-series or TV movie
And the Nominees Are:
Idris Alba – Luther
Ian McShane – Pillars of the Earth
Al Pacino – You Don’t Know Jack
Dennis Quaid – The Special Relationship
Edward Ramirez – Carlos
And the Winner Is:
Honestly I haven’t seen any of the above shows/movies/mini-series but based on overall buzz I’d give it to Al Pacino for his role in You Don’t Know Jack.
Best Supporting Actor in a series, mini-series, or TV movie
And the Nominees Are:
Scott Caan – Hawaii 5-0
Chris Colfer – Glee
Chris Noth – The Good Wife
Eric Stonestreet – Modern Family
David Strathern – Temple Grandin
And the Winner Is:
Chris Colfer is amazing in Glee and definitely the best of the crop of young actors featured in the show. He’s probably the one reason why a lot of ‘on the fencers’ are still watching and he deserves the award without a doubt.
Best Actress in a motion picture, drama
And the Nominees Are:
Halle Berry – Frankie and Alice
Nicole Kidman – Rabbit Hole
Jennifer Lawrence – Winter’s Bone
Natalie Portman – Black Swan
Michelle Williams – Blue Valentine
And the Winner is:
She’s the real breakout actress of the year in her role as Ree Dolly from Winter’s Bone. If by now you don’t know her name then you probably need to hit up your rental store immediately.
Best supporting Actress in a motion picture
And the Nominees Are:
Amy Adams, The Fighter
Helena Bonham Carter – The King’s Speech
Mila Kunis – Black Swan
Melissa Leo – The Fighter
Jackie Weaver – Animal Kingdom
And the Winner Is:
Her performance in Animal Kingdom is so subtle that sometimes you forget that she’s the head of the family. She’s the manipulative mother you hope you never have. She doesn’t need to threaten but with her general demeanor she just makes you want to please her and that’s what makes her the clear cut winner this year.
Best Actress in a motion picture, musical or comedy
And the Nominees Are:
Annette Bening – The Kids Are All Right
Anne Hathaway – Love and Other Drugs
Angelina Jolie – The Tourist
Julianne Moore – The Kids Are All Right
Emma Stone – Easy A
And the Winner Is:
She’s the actress that everyone aspired to be this year. Her line delivery and general work effort in this movie where she just got sideswiped by the screenplay and general screentime wasn’t enough to make her role any less memorable.
Best Actor, TV series, comedy
And the Nominees Are:
Alec Baldwin – 30 Rock
Steve Carell – The Office
Thomas Jane – Hung
Matthew Morrison – Glee
Jim Parsons – The Big Bang Theory
And the Winner Is:
I’m not sure if I really want to make a blanket statement and call Parsons the best comedy actor on television today, but he definitely is one of the best. Out of all of the nominees he’s definitely my favourite. I started watching this show from the very beginning in the middle of last year and was caught up before the year was through. The show is brilliant and all because of Parsons‘ performances of Dr. Sheldon Cooper.
Best Actor in a TV series, drama
And the Nominees Are:
Steve Buscemi – Boardwalk Empire
Bryan Cranston – Breaking Bad
Michael C. Hall – Dexter
John Hamm – Mad Men
Hugh Laurie – House
And the Winner Is:
This was one of the most interesting seasons of Mad Men yet and Don Draper the enigma became even more interesting as a bachelor who was able to sink himself deeper into the dark hole that he has been traversing all throughout the show. With the business in trouble of becoming liquid you never know what Draper would do and Hamm is definitely my favourite actor in Television for the year of 2010.
Best Actress in a TV series, comedy
And the Nominees Are:
Toni Collette – Unites States of Tara
Edie Falco – Nurse Jackie
Tina Fey – 30 Rock
Laura Linney – The Bic C
Lea Michele – Glee
And the Winner Is:
With only The Big C being the show in this category that I’m not watching the award defaults to Toni Collette. She transforms on screen every week into these different characters so fluidly that sometimes I worry for her as a person.
Best Actress in a TV series, drama
The Nominees Are:
Julianna Margulies – The Good Wife
Elizabeth Moss – Mad Men
Piper Perabo – Covert Affairs
Katey Sagal – Sons of Anarchy
Kyra Sedgwick – the Closer
And the Winner Is:
I must admit that the only show of this list that I’m watching in Mad Men so it’s a default win to Elisabeth Moss. Not to say that she isn’t deserving. She’s been playing the up and coming Peggy Olson all throughout the show and has never stopped being an interesting focal point of the show being the example that all women of the time of the show wish they could be.
Best Actress in a mini-series or TV movie
The Nominees Are:
Hayley Atwell – Pillars of the Earth
Claire Danes – Temple Grandin
Judi Dench – Return to Cranford
Romola Garai – Emma
Jennifer Love Hewitt – The Client List
The Winner Is:
I believe in the BBC so let’s go EMMA
Best Supporting Actress in a series, mini-series or TV movie
The Nominees Are:
Hope Davis – The Special Relationship
Jane Lynch – Glee
Kelly McDonald – Boardwalk Empire
Julia Stiles – Dexter
Sofia Vergara – Modern Family
And the Winner Is:
Yes Boardwalk Empire is one of my favourite new HBO dramas and Kelly McDonald is one of the reasons. She’s the smarter than you expect female of the time who’s not afraid to speak her mind and stand up for what she believes to be right, even though from time to time she may slip up in her priorities.
Best TV movie or mini-series
The Nominees Are:
Carlos
The Pacific
Pillars of the Earth
Temple Grandin
You Don’t Know Jack
The Winner Is:
At this point I’m just guessing. I hated The Pacific so I’m going for another show that seems to have a lot of buzz behind it. You Don’t Know Jack takes the award.
Best original score – motion picture
The nominees are:
Alexander Desplot – The King’s Speech
Danny Elfman – Alice in Wonderland
A.R. Robin – 127 Hours
Trent Reznor – The Social Network
Hans Zimmer – Inception
And the Winner is:
Hans Zimmer is without a doubt one of the best composers working today. His work in Inception has been one of the stand out works he’s done in the last ten years. The sound of the film will live on forever and be instantly recognized from every note and will probably live on in films to come as a reference to the science-fiction film that made the world think.
Best screenplay – motion picture
The nominees are:
Danny Boyle – 127 Hours
Lisa Cholodenko and Stuart Hart – Kids are All Right
Christopher Nolan – Inception
David Seidler – Kings Speech
Aaron Sorkin – Social Network
The Winner Is:
It’s the smartest screenplay you’ll have the luxury of hearing actors read to you. I’ve always loved Sorkin‘s style of writing and his dialogue heave scenes, but that’s what makes him so great.
Best TV Series, comedy
And the Nominees are:
30 Rock
The Big Bang Theory
The Big C
Glee
Modern Family
Nurse Jackie
And the Winner is:
In all honesty I want to give this award to The Big C – but I’ve only seen one episode of that show. Out of all the nominees the show most deserving this year has to be The Big Bang Theory. It’s fantastic and has never really dipped in quality.
Best foreign language film
The Nominees are:
Beautiful, Mexico – Spain
The Concert – France
The Edge – Russia
I Am Love – Italy
In a Better World – Denmark
The winner is:
I Am Love is the only foreign film nominated that I’ve been able to see this year. It isn’t undeserving of it’s nomination though. It’s beautiful and intricate with a lot of great performances. I just wish I could say without a doubt it’s my pick of the category.
Best animated feature film
The Nominees Are:
Despicable Me
How to Train Your Dragon
The Illusionist
Tangled
Toy Story 3
The Winner Is:
It’s without a doubt my favourite animated film of 2010. I doubt it’ll actually win the award but I think it can definitely give How To Train Your Dragon as well as Toy Story 3 a run for it’s money.
Best original song – motion picture
The Nominees Are:
Bound to You – Burlesque
Coming Home – Country Strong
I See the Light – Tangled
There’s a Place for Us – Chronicles of Narnia: The Dawn Treader
You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me – Burlesque
The Winner Is:
I love the music in this movie and I can’t see this song not winning for best song of the year. Especially when A. R. Rhaman’s If I Rise from 127 Hours wasn’t nominated.
Best TV series, drama
The Nominees Are:
Boardwalk Empire
Dexter
The Good Wife
Mad Men
The Walking Dead
The Winner Is:
I know I’m not alone in pouring over in adoration for AMC‘s Mad Men but without a doubt it gave us it’s very best so far this year and I can’t see this show taking it. Even though Boardwalk Empire definitely has it’s sights set on the award I have to admit that Mad Men inches it for me.
I predict that Justin Bieber will get kicked in the ass by Trent Reznor.
if he did I probably would've kept watching. I gave up after about ninety minutes… just bored me last night.
Come on, Gervais was hilarious!
He had a few good jabs… but after a while I just started to go like, ye I know these movies are lame but you're being a bit of a dick.
