THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA : PRINCE CASPIAN

Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes), rightful heir to the Telmarine throne, flees his kingdom in fear of being killed as King Miraz (Sergio Castellitto), Caspian’s Uncle, wishes to take control of the throne. Prince Caspian escapes to the land of Narnia where he calls back our four heroes from the previous film, Peter (William Moseley), Susan (Anna Popplewell), Edmund (Skandar Keynes) and Lucy (Georgie Henley). The Kings and Queens of Narnia return to their land to see that it is in complete ruins and its people suffering. Narnia now wages war against the Telmarine regime to bring their lands back to what it once was, alongside Prince Caspian who wishes to reclaim his rightful place in his own kingdom.

Andrew Adamson returns to write and direct the sequel to the popular C.S. Lewis fantasy novels. He does a much better job the second time around I’d like to say. Or at least I found the story of this film twenty times superior to its predecessor. I guess this is because of the books and not the fault of Adamson (I’ve never read the books so I can’t tell you if this assumption is correct or not). The film featured a lot of action sequences rather than paying attention to the vastness of the scenery, and I guess it works out since what would’ve been so wonderfully pretty to look at in Narnia is all dead now.

I actually enjoyed the acting from Ben Barnes, as Prince Caspian, as well as Sergio Castellitto, as Miraz. They did well in their roles. I’m still not fully buying into the main characters though. And an acting mention must be made for Eddie Izzard, as Reepicheep (ie. the badass mouse). It was fun to watch the movie hearing this very familiar voice and by the time the movie is over recognizing that it’s the cross-dressing comedian who jokes about evil giraffes.

I enjoyed this movie a lot. The action was there, the story was there, the new characters were there. There isn’t much missing from it that a children’s fantasy sequel would be missing. If you’re a fan of the series I’m sure you’ll enjoy this one, and if you enjoy fantasy films it is a good watch.

IMDB says 8.0/10

Rotten Tomatoes says 71%

I say 8.0/10

PS.

Recently I saw people complaining about the rating of the movie. That it was too violent for a PG rated film, claiming that Disney had to have used some form of pressure on the MPAA to give this movie a PG rating rather than a PG-13. After seeing the movie for myself, I don’t see what’s wrong. I mean ratings are very fickle things. Especially when you put them in context of when it is being released, by this I mean which decade. I’m sure if this movie was released in the 80s it would easily get a PG-13 rating because they have children carrying around swords, daggers and bows and arrows. As well as people dropping over dying. However, in this decade where we have films like “300”, “Planet Terror” and “No Country for Old Men” which clear cut R rated films, and also movies like “The Bourne Ultimatum”, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” and “16 Blocks” are clear PG-13 ratings. Prince Caspian is surely a PG movie, just not as PG as a “Speed Racer” is.

This is my blog. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My blog is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my blog is useless. Without my blog, I am useless. I must fire my blog true. I will. Before God I swear this creed: my blog and myself are defenders of my mind, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but peace. Amen.

    I would put the level of the violence at about the same as Pirates (another disney movie).

    Pirates = PG-13.

    This probably should have been PG-13

  2. gman

    Only reason Pirates got PG-13 is because of the alcohol and sexual references during the movie, which there was none in Narnia… so still PG.

    a little different from two children smiling at each other for the whole movie and Captain Jack basically saying he wants to rip Keira Knightly dress off.
