So to work with my feature review to come later this week of the new Al Pacino and Robert De Niro movie, Righteous Kill. This has definitely been one of the thoughest lists I’ve made since I’ve started this feature because I found so many that could be in and I had to throw down the axe, but here is the list.
FIVE
Inspector Frederick Abberline [Johnny Depp] and Sergeant Peter Godley [Robbie Coltrane] go on the hunt to catch Jack the Ripper in old London. Frederick and Peter work together in such a weird dynamic, since Frederick really does most of the analysis and thought while Peter works more in the streets. And I can’t help but let the actual greatness of the film making me nominate this one. Depp and Coltrane put on a great performance and make sure we find something more interesting than one of the biggest serial killers ever, Jack the Ripper.
From From Hell (2001).
FOUR
Sergeant Martin Riggs [Mel Gibson] and Sergeant Roger Murtaugh [Danny Glover] are partnered up as two cops who no one wants to work within the department. Riggs is the crazy young gun, and Murtaugh is the old guy who doesn’t want to retire. These guys play off each other so well during the movie, I love their relationship throughout the four [maybe five if you believe some rumours around the net] films. Even though I do believe that the first movie is the best and we didn’t really need this many sequels it was great to watch the relationship grow over the years.
From Lethal Weapon (1987).
THREE
Det. David Mills [Brad Pitt] and Det. Lt. William Somerset [Morgan Freeman] is a more real version of my fourth pick. Here are two detectives paired up for a week. Somerset is retiring after the week, and Mills has been transferred into the city where he is partnered with Somerset for his more or less “orientation” to the big city. These guys do exactly what is done between Riggs and Murtaugh, except in a realistic manner. As if Riggs and Murtaugh are caricatures of Mills and Somerset.
From Se7en (1995).
TWO
Jimmy ‘Popeye’ Doyle [Gene Hackman] and Det. Buddy Russo [Roy Scheider] are narcotics police officers working on a big dope deal going on. They are the underdogs of the department and they work hard, but after some preceding failures they aren’t given a long leash at the department, which makes their dynamic awesomely dramatic to see as one pushes and the other feels they should lay back and follow the pack.
From The French Connection (1971).
ONE
Inspector David Toschi [Mark Ruffalo] and Inspector William Armstrong [Anthony Edwards] are such great characters to watch. They are the lead homicide detectives on the case of the San Francisco serial killer, Zodiac. Their relationship is shown as amazingly enjoyable to watch from the beginning of the film when they go to see the first killings and Toschi is asking Armstrong for animal crackers, from that moment you just want to know more about these two characters and I wished the movie could be four hours long so that I could get to know them better.
From Zodiac (2007).
As I said above I had a lot of contenders for this list… so how about some HONOURABLE MENTIONS
Don’t forget to give me your take on my Top 5 by voting in the Poll here or on the main page and comment.

Superbad cops totally kick the asses of Lethal Weapon cops!!! Superbad cops shld be in the Top 5!
I loved Seth Rogen and Bill Hader in Superbad, but honestly the only close call was if Simon Pegg and Nick Frost from Hot Fuzz would beat Depp and Coltrane from From Hell for the fifth spot.
I don't think you could fool me into even considering that Superbad Mall style Cops > Lethal Weapon Cops
but they r soo old now.. do ppl even care abt those two now??? (mel gibson & danny glover)
newyz, i voted for se7en since i thought freeman and pitt acted excellently in their parts and they had good chemistry.
