THIS WEEK ON DVD

onDVD

As a huge DVD collector here I will give my recommendations on what’s hitting out on DVD based on the film mostly because I haven’t gotten my copy of the disc myself, and hopefully I’ll get this to be weekly.  So this week on DVD:

G. I. Joe : The Rise of Cobra

The movie was a fun action romp and I enjoyed a lot of the cartoon like sequences that balanced the fun and the cheesy perfectly so as to make sure that I didn’t hate it.  This is a movie I wouldn’t mind seeing again but definitely won’t be picking it up, however if you missed it at the theatre then I think it will be a fun evening in as a RENTAL.  It’s comes out on DVD and BluRay with a single disc barebones DVD and a special edition 2 Disc BluRay DVD with a feature commentary from the director Stephen Sommers.  Here is my review of the film from earlier this summer.

North by Northwest (50th Anniversary Edition Blu-Ray Book)

North by Northwest

Here is a movie that I recently discovered via the rental store that I frequent and can definitely think can contend to make my top ten movies of all time (and I’m sure it would land high in the list).  This DVD is a MUST BUY and if you haven’t seen this movie you have to find it on an older DVD release to see it.  The disc comes with a feature commentary by the screenwriter Ernest Lehman, a new 2009 documentary The Master’s Touch: Hitchcock’s Signature Style as well as more features that will make you want to wish you were old enough to have seen this one in the theatre.

It’s a Wonderful Life (Blu-Ray)

Its a Wonderful Life

Here is a classic that I have to admit I’m yet to see but the film’s reputation precedes it.  It’s the stereotypical Christmas film and I can’t wait to see it to see what the whole fuss is about.  For now this is relegated to a RENT only because I can’t recommend a movie I haven’t seen.  So this grade will more than likely be upgraded at the end of the day but it gets the benefit of the doubt.  The disc gives you the classic in a Black & White and Colourized version of the movie.

The Taking of Pehlam 1 2 3

Tony Scott brings Denzel Washington and John Travolta along to remake an awesome heist movie from the 70s and runs it into the ground.  When I saw it in the theatre I didn’t completely hate the movie but at the same time I wouldn’t recommend anyone volunteer to watch this movie which is why I have to tell you to SKIP this DVD and don’t watch this movie until it hits cable and you can actually turn it off without worrying about how much you paid for it.  The disc comes with two commentary tracks and three supplemental features: No Time to Lose – The Making of Taking of Pehlam 123, The Third Rail: New York Undergorund, and From the Top Down: Stylizing Characters.  Here is my review from earlier this summer when I saw it at the theatre.

Aliens in the Attic

Aliens in the Attic

Here comes another bad children’s movie that looks so uninteresting that I cannot recommend you see this without having an Italian mobster have a gun to my head.  The trailer for this movie is so painful and the fact that I had to sit through the trailer so many times at my the theatre is enough of a reason for me to hope a painful death for the DVD.  However, I haven’t seen the movie yet and as uninterested as I am and sure I am that it is a horrible movie I do think that the only thing I expect to be okay is Doris Roberts and the scene where they play a match of Street Fighter with two characters in the movie.  So for now I say SKIP it.

This is my blog. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My blog is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my blog is useless. Without my blog, I am useless. I must fire my blog true. I will. Before God I swear this creed: my blog and myself are defenders of my mind, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but peace. Amen.
