So this week I’m revamping this DVD weekly column to include a ton of subsections. Thanks to Damion and Douglas’ criticism of how I recommend DVDs this is how it will be from now on.
The Movies I’ve Heard of and Don’t give a Damn About
The Limits of Control
Here is a movie about a hitman and what seems some crazy contracts which may include Bill Murray. I remember that I spoke about the trailer for this movie on the podcast a while back and was pretty positive about the trailer. However, after it got a release in the states and I’ve read a few reviews it seems to be the kind of film which doesn’t play with it’s ideas well and turns out into a long and boring waste of time. So I give this a perverbial skip.
Is Anybody There
Here a crusty old man befriends a young child who is bored with life. We’ve seen this with Gran Torino and I don’t think I really need to see this again anytime soon. I’m a huge fan of Michael Caine and I like the persona he tends to play in film now that he’s gotten older, but I have to give this one a skip because I really can’t take another movie that will eventually make me want to cry since I can tell that it will probably end with Caine’s character dying and making me feel too much.
Movies that I Haven’t Seen but Want to Right Now
My Sister’s Keeper
Here is a movie which I did skip at the theatre and actually had a slight amount of interest in because I do enjoy seeing some of those movies that make you care (yes I am contradicting what I said 2 lines ago). This would be a movie that I don’t care for, except my friend Damion spoke about this movie on the podcast a few weeks ago in a good light and I’m going to check this one out based on his recommendation.
Bruno
I’ve heard a few bad things about this movie but it doesn’t help that Sacha Baron Coen made Borat which I really loved so I want to see what he does with this character that seems to be even more offensive than Borat. If he can get more than ten homophobic guests to admit that they are homosexual I will end up loving this movie. I don’t know how to approach this one.
Thirst
Park Chan-Wook has made a vampire movie. Do we need to know anything else to make me watch this? This is the man who gave us Sympathy for Lady Vengeance and Oldboy. If you’ve never seen those movies go and watch those and then you will know how much I want to watch this.
Humpday
Here is the new movie from the Duplass brothers and I’ve heard nothing but praise for it. It probably isn’t the best DVD to find in a Jamaican rental store to check out (I doubt you could even find it in the back room) since it is about two heterosexual friends who decide to enter a sex film fest by submitted a film made by themselves in which they have sex together. YEEEEE…. I know what you are thinking and that thought crossed my mind as well, but a good movie is a good movie and I will watch it soon and let you all know if it is as good as I’ve heard.

ROME (Complete Series)
I love HBO and I love HBO’s Original TV Shows. ROME is one of the few shows from HBO which actually got cancelled and I was sad to see go. With the exception of the final few episodes (which we’re rushed story-wise due to the show being cancelled) this is an amazing TV show that everyone should see. I’m not a history buff so I can’t tell you how historically correct it is but it seems close enough (they have a Ceaser). The acting and storytelling is great and the fact that they can take us into this world that we never really thought about this much is crazy. Some may laugh at how many british accents made it’s way into Rome but I don’t care, watch it and love it.
Star Trek
This is without a doubt one of my favourite movies of the summer and I am happy to say that this is must own for any fans of action adventure or Star Trek fans (yes the franchise was made cool by a Star Wars fan). Read my full review here and listen to me chat about the movie with a couple Trekkies here.
Here are some movies being rereleased on BluRay for HD fans
Here is the thing. I’m not ‘recommending’ these movies. I’m just letting the already fans of the new generation of home theatre and the movies about to be mentioned. Personally all of these movies are either buys or rentals because they are all either movies that have a reputation to go along with them but I may not have seen all of them. So this week on BluRay is:
Chasing Amy
Fight Club
Sex, Lies and VideoTape
Clerks
Gone With the Wind
Leon : The Professional
Awesome subsection categories names… now if only I'd thought of that…
I bet you'll like Thirst, I'll look forward to hearing your thoughts. I'm curious about Humpday, got pretty good reviews and I'll be checking out Bruno soon.
