So day one has come and gone. I’ve so far met Ryan McNeil, Corey Atad & Bob Turnbull, I’ve eaten poutine (and it’s lovely, stop making fun of it now), and taken the subway… I guess I’m like 5 stops off from a full blown Scott Pilgrim bingo winner.
Regardless I saw two films yesterday here’s what I thought:
Looper (dir. Rian Johnson)
“Time travel is one of the most troublesome sub-genres of film to generate a narrative for without creating some sort of gapping plot holes. The easiest trick, used by some of the greats, is to allow for the science and personal timeline discussions to be distracted by using engaging action, humour or even some unrelated to time travel drama. That said Johnson doesn’t spend too much time trying to explain any and everything about the science of time travel as it relates to the world of Looper he does create a well realized world that quite possibly has the best science-fiction background that any big budget film can have.” read my full review over at ScreenInvasion.
Far Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story (dir. Brad Bernstein)
“The film takes us through his foray into political commentary, racial and social commentary as well as erotic expressionism. With Ungerer being born in an area in France so close to the German border (so close it even became part of Germany for a while) in 1931 he’s lived a life in which he’s witnessed first-hand wars of races, genders and nations; which are all things that he’s managed to utilize to feed into his art.” read my full review on FSR
Today’s festival schedule for me: Rust & Bone, Interview with Nathan Johnson (composer of Looper), The We and The I
