So this week my feature review will be on Step Brothers. Here are my Top 5 characters in film that are brothers…
FIVE
Charlie & Donald Kaufman [Nicholas Cage & Nicholas Cage] from Adaptation take my 5th spot. I loved this movie, and some may claim disqualification since it isn’t clear if Nicholas Cage was playing a crazy person who imagined that he had a brother or if Donald is real [but I don’t give a damn]. I loved this movie, and it had to do a lot with Nicholas Cage’s performance.
FOUR
Elwood & Jake Blues [Dan Akroyd & John Beluschi] from The Blues Brothers. This is one of my favourite musicals from the 80s. I loved the relationship here, since they don’t ever have that brotherly love scene. It is as if they aren’t even brothers, these characters could easily be just friends, or even band members. But its just hilarious to watch the two together.
THREE
Joey & Jake La Motta [Joe Pesci & Robert De Niro] from Raging Bull. These two characters are amazing together since you never forget that they are brothers. They understand each other, and know how to play around with each other and how to get on each others nerves. I love how Hoey tries to keep Jake honest by letting him know when he shouldn’t be doing anything, but because of Jake’s nature he does what he wants and Joey has to play clean up most of the time.
TWO
Gus & Lars Lindstorm [Paul Schnieder & Ryan Gosling] from Lars and the Real Girl. Here is a situation where Gus has to stand by his brother [Lars] as he watches him go through this stage in his life. Lars is a recluse who decides to get a blow-up sex doll and pretend it is his real girlfriend. As a brother I’m not sure how I would have to respond to a scenario like this, but here is a response that always has interested me.
ONE
Derek & Danny Vinyard [Edward Norton & Edward Furlong] from American History X. Now this wins it not because of the relationship, since if you’ve seen this movie you would know that there isn’t much of a direct relationship between the characters. What I love is what Derek does for his brother, because he knows what is right. After being released from jail he finds his brother has joined the ranks of a Nazi group that he used to be a part of; which is why he ended up in jail. And Derek goes to extreme ends to get Danny out of the group, even against his will so that Danny wont make the same mistake he already made himself.
