Now I’ve seen a ton of top ten/five lists on the internet blogosphere and podcasts about Father’s Day and I started to think how boring it would be for me to make another Top Ten on screen dads list. So here I will list some of my favourite movies that I have introduced my father to and he was happy that I did.
This seems very easy and enjoyable for me since my father, at least in the last decade or so, has distanced himself from the theatre and decided to stick himself in front of HBO. He hasn’t been to the theatre for a non Marvel movie for a really long while, and he didn’t even see Iron Man in the theatre. So most of his movie watching is done via cable or whatever DVDs I send his way. Anyways here is the list:
FIVE – 3:10 to Yuma
Here is a remake of a western that he loved from his childhood, and I love this movie but he hates Christian Bale and I was hoping to ruin his childhood memories because I’m a horrible person. However, in the end he ended up loving the movie because it takes a different look at the original story along with the great performances from Russell Crowe and Ben Foster.
FOUR – No Country for Old Men
Like everyone else’s father my dad loves westerns. So when he saw this movie won the Academy Award for tons of crap he was ready to see this movie. It was my favourite movie from that year so after I got the DVD he immediately stole it and we watched it together and he queued me into so many western references that I had no clue about since I’m not a huge fan of westerns – I’m giving it a second chance now promise.
THREE – Once
This movie blew me away and I had forced my dad to listen to the soundtrack so many times on Sunday afternoons during dinner but when he got to see the movie he was so sold. He loved the music even more since he got to see some played live and others played like a great music video. I mean in the end he agreed that without the music the movie would be nothing but it was a great international movie that was why I was raving about it.
TWO – The Fountain
So this one I’m almost stealing because I suggested it to them, but he forgot about it and eventually saw it on cable one day and he loved it. He had seen The Wrestler which he loved already, that I suggested, so he was somewhat familiar with Darren Aronofsky when he sat down to see this movie. He got tricked into watching it by my mother since Hugh Jackman was staring and by the end of the movie he was so happy he finally watched it.
ONE – Apocalypse Now
Now the question is can I take credit for this one? I will totally take credit. He had this on his “to watch” list forever but he probably would never watch it unless I got the DVD which I’m so happy I did because I bought it without actually seeing the movie first. This is one of my all-time favourite movies and my father agrees with me. One of the best aspects of the movie is the portrayal of the soldiers as scared children rather than all being John Rambo.
Also for the record my latest suggestion for him to watch is Rian Johnson’s Brick and I can’t wait to hear what his thoughts on that is.
3:10 to yuma is a horrible piece of shit movie, i was so mad at the end …… The fountain is great … i need to see once.
