Is this a bad week? Well I dipped in film watching, for a lot of reasons, but I guess for the most part because I’ve been distracting myself with gaming (Far Cry 3 is awesome) as well as my ploughing through LOST rewatch (I’ve started the final season now). Anyways I’m going to stop making excuses and here’s what I actually watched this week:
HOW DO YOU WRITE A JOE SCHERMANN SONG (2012)
I was so looking forward to this movie. Part of me wanted to have hope that this movie would be great, sadly it wasn’t. The film just feels so bad. While the musical beats, sometimes, were okay to good overall it’s forgettable. The singing talent wasn’t that well placed and with a film that the filmmaker purposefully referenced such classics as West Side Story (my favourite musical of all time) and Cabaret you hope for better.
THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE (1962)
Completing my John Ford marathon I got around to watching this classic western and while I have my minor quibbles here and there it’s overall a great film if for nothing else I get a two hour period of time to hang out with The Duke and Lee Marvin and such. Read my full review here.
DELIVERANCE (1972)
So much like a lot of films from the 70s. It reminds me a lot of Peckinpah’s Straw Dogs in how it tries to create mood and narrative through visuals using a very stripped down story. I want to almost blame this film for being too bare of a story but when it hits you it hits hard.
REWATCHED
I won’t linger long on these rewatches. I saw Tiny Furniture, which I still love, Smashed, which I’m going to go ahead and give the I like and at the same time wish I loved, and Cool Hand Luke which I adore.
My count for the year of 2013 is updated to 67 First time watches (12 from 2013); 44 Rewatches; 111 Total Films
