It’s been a while and I’ve yet to keep this weekly post up to date for the last three weeks thanks to my crazy TIFF holiday (which I hope you all enjoyed reading about over at FSR). I hope you got a chance to read my post festival article as well as my interview with Nathan Johnson about his score on Looper.
So I shall not dilly dally any longer, and let’s get this thing cracking:
FIRST TIME WATCHED
PICKPOCKET (1959) – a bit too methodical for my liking but damn is the female in this movie hot.
LOOPER (2012) – brilliant, just brilliant.
FAR OUT ISN’T FAR ENOUGH: THE TOMI UNGERER STORY (2012) – great look at the struggle of an artist and his twisted philosphy on life.
RUST AND BONE (2012) – manipulative at times but still amazing.
THE WE AND THE I (2012) – boring, and bad.
THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES (2012) – fantastic film which surprised me in that it wasn’t what I thought it would be.
SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS (2012) – film that plays with conventions and great.
A LIAR’S AUTOBIOGRAPHY — THE UNTRUE STORY OF MONTY PYTHON’S GRAHAM CHAPMAN (2012) – uninteresting and not very informative.
LIKE SOMEONE IN LOVE (2012) – brilliant little slice of life film with few questions and even less answers.
PUSHER (2012) – boring and over directed remake.
THE SESSIONS (2012) – great sex comedy with acting that will melt your face off.
9.79* (2012) – documentary that looks at an interesting moment in sports history but fails to contextualize it in the grander scheme of things.
HELLBENDERS (2012) – after fifteen minutes the joke isn’t funny anymore.
AT ANY PRICE (2012) – overbearing drama which has content, but doesn’t quite service it that well.
EVERYDAY (2012) – brilliant emotional story that feeds on manipulating you and if you let you will love it.
THE ICEMAN (2012) – great fun film with a brilliant performance by Michael Shannon. I almost don’t want to see it as a true story.
DANGEROUS LIAISONS (2012) – fun first ninety minutes and weird last hour, but overall great adaptation.
PASSION (2012) – enjoyable film but nothing more. It pushes the contrived thriller to it’s limits and as long as you’re along for the ride you’ll have a lot of fun.
AFTERSHOCK (2012) – enjoyable horror film that doesn’t rise to any high brow demands.
KEY OF LIFE (2012) – lovely screwball Japanese comedy that everyone should see.
SMASHED (2012) – brilliant performance by Mary Elizabeth Winstead but a film which doesn’t give it’s arguements much weight.
MOTORWAY (2012) – cheesy Hong Kong driving film that doesn’t quite make its potential.
SIGHTSEERS (2012) – amazingly hilarious dark comedy that washes away all the nightmares from Kill List.
REALITY (2012) – great study of obsession and celebrity in reality television and so much more.
MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING (2012) – fun quirky adaptation of Shakespeare with Whedon and his gang having fun.
PIETA (2012) – dark and slightly disturbing South Korean revenge film that goes for the jugular.
GHOST GRADUATION (2012) – light and fun homage to John Hughes with a twist.
CLOUD ATLAS (2012) – deep and fun blockbuster filmmaking at its best.
THANKS FOR SHARING (2012) – trite and underdeveloped story that takes on sex addiction.
THERMAE ROMAE (2012) – silly Japanese time travel/bath house film that makes little sense, but doesn’t ask you to anyways.
JOHN DIES AT THE END (2012) – stupid and unfunny film that believes it’s being clever.
THE LAST SUPPER (2012) – long and slow beautiful film.
HERE COMES THE DEVIL (2012) – creepy Grindhouse kind of horror film that disturbed me after seeing it.
THE MASTER (2012) – hypnotic and gorgeous.
TO THE WONDER (2012) – more nature shots with voice over, if you’re game you’ll enjoy.
END OF WATCH (2012) – great chemistry between the leads but a distracting camera ruins the film.
LAWLESS (2012) – Tom Hardy grunts his way into history and a fun film.
MONSIEUR LAZHAR (2012) – interesting look at tragedy and how children and adults face the same troubles.
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS (SEASON 1) – while it can come off as highly manipulative it’s still an enjoyable drama to churn through.
